5 Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring a DJ

A DJ can make or break an entire event. Music determines the mood of the party, and when that flow of music is interrupted by a lack of professionalism, things can go south quickly. Here are five mistakes you should avoid when booking your next DJ so that your next event is #flawless.

Mistake #1: You didn’t book your DJ early enough

There’s a reason countless wedding/event websites have created timelines for you to follow when booking vendors (we created one too - view it here). The best quality vendors will be booked months in advance, and that includes DJs.

So, if you want to be sure to book the best possible DJ for your next event, you’re going to want to plan ahead. Contrary to popular belief, all DJ’s are not created equal. If you book last minute, you’re going to pay for it.

Mistake #2: You hired a “Friend of a Friend” as your DJ

Listen, we’ve all been tempted to go the cheap route and just ask one of our friends (or a friend’s friend, or an uncle, or a distant cousin) to run the playlist at our event. The problem? They’re usually not trained to run events and things get really awkward, really fast. Pauses, skipping songs, playing things at the wrong time, and not announcing the big moments are just a few of the things you’ll have to worry about. Remove that extra stress, and make your event professional!

Mistake #3: You hired a DJ, but you didn’t meet them before your event

This is probably one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Maybe you decide to go with a trusted DJ company, but the DJ that you booked just doesn’t fit your needs. It might not even be a lack of experience, but just a lack of chemistry between you and the DJ. Or maybe they really love country music, and you’re super into DMX. That’s why you should always always ALWAYS meet your DJ before deciding to book.

Whoever you decide to have as your DJ will most likely be making announcements and setting the entire atmosphere of your event. Therefore, you should be absolutely positive they’re the right fit. Lucky for you, Foresight has all of our customers fill out a survey so that you’re paired with the perfect DJ for you. You’ll also get to meet the DJ several times before your big event so that you can make sure everything is just right!

Mistake #4: You didn’t check which equipment would be provided by your DJ

So you were hoping that the DJ would announce the bride and groom, when to eat, etc., but when he/she shows up they have no microphone. Whoops.

Always check ahead with your DJ to see what equipment they will be providing. If you don’t know what some of that equipment means, ask! Your DJ should be able to explain every part of their equipment and what it can be used for. Foresight DJs will absolutely provide this information for you, and can even go through your event and your expectations so that you can be sure you are taken care of.

Mistake #5: You hired a DJ based solely on their pricing

We get it. Weddings are expensive, and the price tag on a particular vendor can really make or break your decision to book them. However, the saying “you get what you paid for” holds a lot of truth. It may be tempting to go with the lower-quality DJ just because of the price, but can you really put a price on peace of mind and a really good party?

Plus, within a week of the wedding reception, 78% of brides say they wish they had spent more on the entertainment at their wedding. That’s a lot of brides! Don’t make the same mistake. Spend a little extra so that you can get the party of your dreams.
