Whether you’re planning the wedding of your dreams, or grandma’s retirement party, it should be absolutely perfect. That means the decorations, the food, and the music all need to be coordinated down to the last detail. Let’s face it, nothing ruins a party quite like DJ Awkward making sloppy announcements during what was supposed to be your father-daughter dance. Yuck.

So, to avoid a catastrophe, we’ve created a list of 10 questions you should ask your DJ before the big day so there are no unwanted surprises.

1. What’s your style?

The style of your DJ really needs to fit the mood of your event. If you’re going for something classy, you probably don’t want a DJ who prefers grunge metal. The best thing about Foresight Media is that all of our DJ’s meet with our clients before their big day so that they can pick the style of their event. We have a large variety of playlists to choose from to fit your style, but we’re also totally up for whatever special requests you may have!

2. Who will do the setup?

Unless you’re also a DJ or some sort of musician, you probably don’t know how to set everything up. It’s important to check with your DJ to make sure that they’ll be taking care of that part of the gig as well as tearing everything down. You probably don’t want to be sorting through cables on top of all of the other preparations for your event!

3. Do you provide any decorations or lighting?

Beyond just providing music, some DJ’s will provide special lighting and effects (like a fog machine, or a disco ball). It’s important to figure out what your DJ is planning on bringing, and what exactly is included in the price.

4. What do you wear to the events you DJ?

Many DJ’s have a professional uniform that they’ll wear to events, but there are also some who don’t. You’ll want to be sure whatever your DJ wears to your event fits the theme. Strange outfits can definitely ruin your photos!

5. Do you take song requests?

Figuring this part out ahead of time is key! Most DJ’s have a preferred way to receive song requests. Additionally, you might not want your guests to make requests at all. These are all things that should be discussed with your DJ ahead of time. The DJ’s at Foresight Media are committed to working with you to make sure all of your favorite songs are played at your event!

6. Will you act as the “emcee” and make the announcements at my event?

It’s not always guaranteed that your DJ will let people know when to eat, toast, and dance. All of Foresight’s DJ’s are trained to handle announcements on your big day, but if you’d prefer a maid of honor or family member do the honor instead, that’s okay too!

7. How many hours are included in the cost?

Most DJ’s have a minimum amount of hours that they’ll play. Depending on how long your event is, you’ll also have to factor in any breaks your DJ needs to take for food or water. Setting this up ahead of time ensures there are no hiccups in the schedule, or awkward lulls in the music!

8. What’s your cancellation policy?

Things happen. Sometimes plans change, and thus your needs change as well. It’s important to know what your DJ’s cancellation policy is in case something happens that just can’t be avoided.

9. What happens if no one is dancing?

Some DJ’s use the mic to amp up a dead crowd, others just change the music to one that better fits the mood. It’s important to know what your own preferences are so that you can be sure the DJ matches your preferences.

10. What sets you apart from the competition?

Most professional DJ’s (the good ones, at least) take pride in their work and will use this question as an opportunity to communicate their passion for what they do. Other DJ’s may use this as an opportunity to bash their competition in a negative way. Try to steer clear from anyone who uses negativity to boost their own business. That kind of attitude is not one you want hanging around your event.
